Birds are both beautiful and interesting.
We have found that when we observe birds exhibiting the specific behaviors that help them survive in their ecological niche, the pictures come out better--that is, more compelling.
Maybe photography works when the photographer "catches" the bird doing something engaging. It's not that birds can't be just pretty, it's just that when they express their uniqueness in action, while looking physically unique is when the photograph or sound is most engaging.
